RFP Experience
I was asked to post the following email from Barb Santner which discusses an issue that could impact many of us in the landscape architectural community. Let us know your thoughts…
Hello All,
I would like to bring up an issue to the group for consideration. It is common practice in the public sector RFQ’s/RFP’s to request that a consultant list project experience 5 years or younger only as applicable experience. With the economic downturn and so many fewer projects being done this seems to be an unfair and less relevant request, particularly for parks projects. The continued use of the 5 year limit seems to set up a situation where few firms will have projects that qualify under that requirement.
I understand this issue was addressed by the Nevada ASLA in southern Nevada and NASLA sent letters to the agencies requesting that the 5 year term be elongated to 10 years. I wonder if there is interest and support in sending a similar letter to our public sector agencies in Northern Nevada. Please let me know your thoughts. I would be happy to lead this effort.

Remembering Chad Crutcher
We are remembering our friend and colleague Chad Crutcher, who passed away Sunday, April 18th. Chad worked hard as former Northern Nevada ASLA section chair to increase the prestige of the profession in this area. Chad's wife has requested donations to Heifer International (www.heifer.org) in his memory. Ryan and Joe went to the memorial service which was very nice, but a reminder of how short our visit is and to make the most of it. More information is available at http://www.sierrasun.com/article/20100422/NEWS/100429968.

Look what's new!
Thanks to someone's suggestion, this blog now has a link to CLARB. We also added LJM Design Group to our list of landscape architects. Comments and suggestions are always welcome.
"The LA Spotlight"
One of the goals of this blog is to bring the landscape architecture community in Northern Nevada a little bit closer together. So we have decided to try a weekly post called "The LA Spotlight," where we learn a few things about one of our fellow LAs. Each Friday we will shine the spotlight on a Northern Nevada landscape architect.
This week we are going to shine the spotlight on Joe Hitzel. If you don't know who Joe is... well, that's the reason for the spotlight. Let us know if you have any great questions you want him to answer. If not... you'll just have to see what we come up with.
After Joe we may be shining the spotlight on you!

Northern Nevada Landscape Architects meet for lunch
We had a great turnout. If you weren't there I would encourage you to attend the next meeting. Not only was the food fantastic, but it was great to catch up with everybody. It is amazing how seldom we get to visit with our fellow landscape architects.
The date and time for the next meeting will be posted in the coming weeks.

What can we do to help?
I have seen emails going back and forth between our members wondering if there is something the landscape architecture community can do. I was wondering the same thing. I have been personally involved with an organization called charity:water which is supported by corporate sponsors and uses 100% of all public donations to build wells in underdeveloped countries.
charity:water is not a disaster relief organization but they are asking that donations be made directly to their implementing partners on the ground. I have full confidence in charity:water and they have full confidence in these groups so I am passing this information along to anyone who might be interested. If you would like to learn more you can click on the following links:

I wanted to pass along this information due to the magnitude of the crisis in Haiti and the need for immediate help.
HOW CAN WE HELP THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
I wanted to open a discussion of ideas on how we might help our local community while, at the same time, increase awareness of our profession and what we do. One idea could be a "McCarran March" where we walk the McCarran loop to raise awareness and funds for a particular local cause. I believe this could be done on sidewalks and pathways most of the way. It is a long distance and could be broken into seperate legs, as opposed to a person trying to walk the whole thing. During the walk we could ask that donations be made at certain locations such as grocery stores or banks.
Such an event could draw a lot of publicity and benefit both the chosen charity and our profession as far as increased publicity goes.
So what are your thoughts? Any other ideas? Simply click on the title at the top of this post if you want to leave a comment.
